Why You’re Still Stuck (Even Though You Say You Want to Heal)

Some pain doesn’t trap us.
We return to it.
Why do some of us stay in pain, even when we say we want to heal?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about suffering—not just pain, but the kind that lingers long after the initial wound. The kind that becomes familiar. Ritualistic. Something we return to, even when it’s hurting us.
—
I’ve started taking on more private clients lately.
And there’s one in particular I can’t stop thinking about.
Let’s call him Daniel.
Daniel comes to every session, sits down with intention, and pours out the same story.
Week after week.
A painful loop.
He says he wants to change. He says he’s tired of suffering. But nothing ever shifts. No integration. No movement. Just the ritual of retelling.
—
Eventually, I asked him something I don’t think anyone had ever asked him before.
Are you sure you actually want to heal?
He didn’t get defensive.
He didn’t argue.
He just went quiet.
And in that silence—
I realized something I hadn’t wanted to admit.
And maybe you’ve felt this too.
—
Because the truth is—
wanting to feel better
is not the same as being ready to heal.
And what I’ve learned about suffering…
is more uncomfortable than most people expect.

If this stirred something in you, the rest is waiting for you.
